SummerWorks

The Summer Works Program offers a meaningful work experience to eligible youth ages 14 - 21 for the months of July through August. The program introduces neighborhood youth to future employers, new work environments, professionalism and potential career choices.

About the program:

  • 6 week program
  • Teens work for a maximum of 20 hours a week at a rate of $7.25 an hour
  • Serves teens ages 14-21
  • It costs ABCD about $1,300 to employ one teen for the summer
  • All teens live in the Mission Hill and Fenway neighborhoods
  • All teens are low-income and are placed in local non-profit organizations in the Mission Hill and Fenway area

2005 Summer Stats for Parker Hill/Fenway:

  • Over 680 teens applied for the program at the Parker Hill/Fenway office
  • 100 youth was the minimum goal for placements this summer
  • Placed a total of 116 youth through SummerWorks (89) and private jobs (27)
  • Fundraised $41,5822.22 to place a total of 89 Mission Hill/Fenway youth to work through SummerWorks
  • 17 local worksites participated in this year’s program, with 6 worksites hiring youth on their payrolls
  • Implemented more workshops this summer including: financial literacy and free bank accounts with Citizen’s Bank; civic education with State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez; self-defense; and resume writing and job readiness

2004 Summer Stats for Parker Hill/Fenway:

  • Approximately 636 teens applied for the program at the Parker Hill/Fenway office
  • Only 60 teens were placed in jobs due to funding
  • Parker Hill/Fenway raised an additional $42,000 allowing 30 more teens to be placed: Funding came from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, Emmanuel College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Mission Hill/Fenway Trust Fund, Joslin Diabetes Center, Mass. College of Pharmacy, Merck Pharmaceutical, New Boston Management Services
  • Total wages earned by teens in this neighborhood: $87,538.39
  • 14 local worksites participated in the program
  • One business donated a job: Brigham Circle Realty
  • Two hospitals donated jobs: Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital
  • On average 8.8% of households depended on the wages of teens to make ends meet during the summer
